Pediatric Lab v Adult Yorkie: Same size different physiology! - It is important to realize that pediatric patients are not just small dogs and cats. During the neonatal and pediatric phase, body systems are growing and maturing. Depending on where the puppy/kitten is in the pediatric phase of life, normal parameters and responses to stimuli, such as drugs and ambient temperature, will vary. This talk will discuss these developing patients and the special considerations needed for their immature systems from a nursing perspective.

The Hypos: Common Pediatric Emergencies - There are several disease states as well as environmental reasons that can cause emergency in the pediatric patient. Congenital malformations such as cleft palate may inhibit feeding. Vomiting and diarrhea due to parvovirus may cause dehydration. An upper respiratory infection may cause difficulty breathing. Regardless of the cause, most pediatric emergencies present with one or more of “the hypos”: hypothermia, hypoxia, hypoglycemia, or hypovolemia. Nursing care is critical to resolving these hypos so an understanding of what to look for, what is happening, and how to treat is necessary for any veterinary technician working with neonatal and pediatric patients.

Speaker Bio: Erin Spencer began working as a veterinary assistant in 1998 and went on to earn her degree in Veterinary Technology in 2001 from Northshore Community College. Erin quickly found emergency medicine and continued working primarily as an emergency and critical care technician for the next decade. She earned her VTS (Veterinary Technician Specialty) in Emergency and Critical Care in 2011. Always looking for a challenge, her next step was into a supervisor and, eventually, a management role. She served as the technician manager for a large emergency in specialty hospital, overseeing roughly 90 technicians in 10 departments. Erin has been a staff technician with Rural Area Veterinary Services for over a decade. She does at least 4 field clinics per year providing veterinary care to underserved communities on Native American reservations while teaching the next generation of veterinary and veterinary technology students. Between educating technicians while working as a manager and educating veterinary students on RAVS clinics, Erin realized she immensely enjoyed teaching. She earned her M. Ed. in 2015. She was an Assistant Professor with the University of Massachusetts Veterinary Technology (formerly Mount Ida) program and taught courses including Anatomy & Physiology, Veterinary Management, and Diagnostic Imaging. In 2019, Erin launched her own business, Brown Dog Veterinary Solutions, providing RECOVER CPR certification, anesthesia basics training, and team utilization consulting to veterinary practices. Erin is highly involved in the Veterinary Technology community. She is a past president and current chair of the legislative committee for the Massachusetts Veterinary Technician Association and the Immediate Past President of NAVTA.
